The luncheon, sponsored by Bombardier, focused on fostering Canada-China trade relations. We were to make sure Bombardier and the Chinese government were once again confronted with vocal opposition to the China-Tibet railway and to tell Canadian companies to stay out of Tibet until Tibetans are free to determine their own future.

Jessica waited while the head table was introduced (including 2 Bombardier representatives and the Ambassador) and as the approximately 350 guests turned to start eating their appetizer salads, Jess stood up, held up a Tibetan flag and yelled: "Shame on Bombardier! Shame on China! Canadians have no business in Tibet until Tibetans have their freedom and human rights! Bombardier has no business in Tibet! You may have profits but Tibetans have truth on their side! Shame on Bombardier! Shame on China! The room was dead silent. At this point she was approached by hotel security and escorted out of the room. Our point had been made.

Cost for the Chinese ambassador: Public embarrassment and lose of face.
Cost for Bombardier: Publicly confronted once again for its involvement in the China-Tibet railway - all this negative publicity sure must look bad to the shareholders.

Priceless!

Break up with Google!!!!

Let Google know: It's over! A small but dedicated group of
SFT Toronto and CTC Toronto members arrived at the office on Thursday at
5pm to have some face time with the good folks at Google. After talking
their way through security (the office is on the 27th floor, so it
required some maneuvering), two members presented a letter expressing
the outrage of Tibetans and supports across the country to a very
surprised looking receptionist. They tasted soooo good. Mmmm. While the momo’s were being made the board got the place looking less like a meeting place and more like a place for partying. We quickly got to prepping the place for some action, please note: no repelling was involved. We cleared the living room of any evidence that a meeting had taken place. Then we not so subtly placed a bar where main entrance was supposed to be. Add some mood lighting, SFT literature, music and a DVD showing some of successes SFT had enjoyed in the past and we were ready to begin. Pema began an impassioned speech, which ended with Akayo going around with a donation basket that was promptly filled. But that was by no means the end; I noticed that as people started to finish eating they also started to drink more. And in some crazy inverse relationship the increase in alcohol consumption led to a decrease in conversations on Tibet and a sharp increase in tactless humour. Somewhere between the pseudo dance contest, the arm wrestling and the “shot’s for Tibet” contest (it was Jack Daniel’s btw…ugh.) the night became a blur for me. That means its raining outside (beats Montreal, where it’s probably cold and icy. I digress).
Right now we’re on a lunch break, so I thought I’d stick up an update.
In all seriousness, what a morning. We got up, had breakfast, and then went into the thick of it by 9 am. We discussed some upcoming projects for SFT Canada, which I found a really good experience, as it enables everyone to get to communicate face to face with members of SFT from around the country. Where is this big thing of ours going? Where do we want it to go? How can we be the change we wish to see in the world?
What I found particularly interesting was a discussion we had about understanding ourselves within the context of a larger movement working for social, economic and environmental justice. It made me remember that while SFT’s focus is working for Tibetans, a lot of people here have been involved with a lot more – and will continue do – so much other stuff as well. There’s a wider vision to this shtick.
Anyways, back to it then.

BOD Retreat Update #1

So we’re in the SFT Canada HQ office in beautiful British Columbia (that means Kate’s house) and just ate an awesome dinner, allowing the board to meet and greet each other, in many cases for the first time. I got to catch up with Kate (yo, we’re getting old fast) while also finally meeting Kephun, Ayako, Sam, Pema and Mel. Cool folks!
We then followed our great chilli dinner (replete with bread of all sorts) with many jokes, and a viewing of the SFT DVD – a little dose of concentrated inspiration before we get into the nitty gritty of this awesome thing called SFT all day tomorrow. Yesterday afternoon was the first time Kate, Freya and Sam had been all together since that amazing trip. There was some reminiscing about their three days in the dragon's den: how they were detained by Chinese Police, pursued by Chinese and Canadian officials, nearly framed by secret police, and generally paranoid until they were escorted by the Canadian Embassy onto the plane bound for home.

The action was a watershed of publicity for SFT and an impetus for creating SFT Canada.

Since their trip to Beijing, Freya has worked extensively with SFT New York and has now been accepted to Columbia's Masters program; Kate has finished her degree at UBC and now heads SFT Canada; and Sam disappeared into the Brazilian Amazon and recently returned to Canada to volunteer on the SFT Canada board. The trio also discussed plans and strategies for the upcoming SFT Canada Board retreat that will be held this month in Vancouver. A mock sweatshop/prison labour camp was set-up (with four sewing machines in two rows) and a Chinese prison official was constantly yelling at the prisoners to "hurry up, it's the holiday season", "double order, no breaks" etc. It was super effective as many children were concerned and asking their parents why these people were being treated so poorly. On a lighter note, we rented a large fuzzy stuffed bear costume, which walked around with a "Boycott Made in China" sign, handing out leaflet asking shoppers to shop ethically this holiday season. We had numerous letters and petitions for people to sign (including the Beaudoin/Grinch cards!) and our information table was swamped.

The media turn-out was really good! Click here to see a picture of the event printed in one of Vancouver's free daily magazines (which everyone reads even if they won't admit it), a clip on the evening news and radio interviews with CBC and some other local stations.

It's always inspiring to realize how many people support Tibetan independence and were eager to sign our petition and letters.

Stay tunned for more pictures!

Chinese 'greeters' paid during Hu's Canada visit

Remember during Hu Jintao's visit to Canada we couldn't figure out how the Chinese government managed to get so many pro-China 'greeters' out to welcome Hu. For those of us in Vancouver it was pretty obvious this was an organized operation. Well, it would seem this was an extrememly well orchestrated (and well funded) propganda exercise. SFT members obtained an 'instruction sheet' issued by the Vancouver Chinese Consulate and the translation has been posted on SFT's website, click here.
Not only were the 'greeters' paid $50/day, they were also told to "chant in unison, “Welcome, Welcome, Big Welcome" upon Hu's arrival. This was obviously staged to be broadcasted back in China. Although the instruction sheet calls on the 'greeters' to refrain from "fighting and verbal arugments", some members of the crowd were obviously there to intentially disrupt and intimidate pro-Tibet demonstrations. The pic above shows SFT Vancouver members being mobbed by some of the 'greeters'. To read more about the instance, click here.

For those of us at the Vancouver demonstrations it was a stark reminder of the lengths to which the Chinese government will go in order to silence voices critical of the continued occupation of Tibet. If this can occur in a country like Canada, we can only begin to imagine the level of repression and control that exists in China and Tibet. To end on a positive note, I believe this whole ordeal also shows that our tactics are working. We're having an impact or why else there would there be the need to spend thousands of dollars paying people to shut us up! And no matter how many people they turn out, our message will carry louder and farther because it's real, as real as the inevitability of a Free Tibet!

Premier McGuinty stumped on rights improvements in China

Last week SFT members in Ontario sent 100 faxes to Premier McGuinty's office encouraging the him to raise the issue of Tibet will China's leaders during his trade mission which wraps up on Nov 14th. CTC Toronto was also incredibly vocal in pushing the Premier to speak up about Tibet, holding a press conference and vigil at the Ontario legislature.

On Tuesday McGuinty spoke about civil rights in China with a small group of students and professors during a talk at the Tsinghua University, but failed to raise the issue of Tibet or human rights during his sole meeting with a Chinese government reprentative. Geoffrey York, a reporter with the Globe and Mail was quick to call him on it - to read the article, click here.

Let's not let McGuinty get away with this tokenistic approach to the human rights situation in Tibet and China, send him a message now expressing your disappointment at his lack of leadership on these issues.

Fax: (416) 325-3745
Email: Dalton.McGuinty@premier.gov.on.ca.

Bombardier's Feeling the Heat!

Thanks to everyone who participated in yesterday's global day of action protesting Bombardier's involvement in building China's railway in Tibet. If you haven't already done so, check out http://BombarideroutofTibet.org - where we've received over 200 photos of people from around the world telling Bombardier to get out of Tibet! Over 1500 faxes were sent to Bombardier CEO, Laurent Beaudoin!

Also, click here to see photos and reports from the actions at Bombardier offices worldwide (pic to the right is from the rockin' demo in Montreal). We've received reports from activist in different cities that Bombardier circulated an email instructing employees not take out leaflets or let us onto Bombardier property. However, we still managed to hand out thousands of leaflets to Bombardier employees explaining our campaign and encouraging them to support Tibet.

We also presented petitions and letters to office managers - and in Montreal, a local Tibet SFTer asked to meet personally with Beaudoin! His request was refused, but Bombardier's learning (the hard way) that the International Tibet Movement is a force that can't be ignored or silenced with silly rhetoric. Until Bombardier drops the contract, the company will face increased public scrutiny and embarrassment by Tibetans and supporters in Canada and across the globe. If they were scared by yesterday's day of action, they ain't seen nothing yet.

Bombardier: Day of Action!!!!

Hey SFTers across Canada!
Here in Vancouver, the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraiser University and Langara College are planning, for November 3rd, to set up a photo booth in our student union buildings. We are going to email pictures of people holding up a placard that reads "Bombardier Out of Tibet!" or "Bombardier Hors du Tibet!" which we will email to Bombardier and post on a website. For an example, check out www.studentsforafreetibet.org/canada where Kate, our awesome national coordinator, is looking fine! After handing out leaflets for about 15 minutes, Chris and Noah were approached by the Engeneering Students Society president and told to leave because "Bombardier paid for its booth" and protests are not permitted in the building where the display was located. After much discussion Chris and Noah agreed to leaflet at the entrance but not before they contacted the campus newspaper - check out the blog later this week as we'll be sure to post the article from the Concordia Sower

You too can help expose Bombardier on your campus! Contact your local engeneering societies to find out if Bombardier recruiters are planning a visit anytime soon to your campus. Make sure to have copies of the downloadable cartoon and leaflets - click here.

Other ways you can do help increase pressure on Bombardier:
1) Contact you MP and ask him/her to write a letter to Bombardier CEO Laurent Beaudoin, click here for more details and a sample letter for your MP to send.
2) Download the cartoon (click here), and post it up around campus and in your community. Be creative
3) If you live in the Montreal area and are interested in helping leaflet the Bombardier headquarters, contact SFT Montreal, click here

Images speak louder than words - and this picture exposes it all.

Liu Zhijun, Minister of Railways of China and Laurent Beaudoin, CEO of Bombardier sign a cooperation agreement with Hu Jintao and Paul Martin in the background.

SFT Canada Board News

SFT Canada

Hi All,

The SFT Canada Board of Directors just had a conference call tonight. We had about a hundred supporters in addition to many Falun Gong and Tiawanese who noisily greeted Hu Jintao. About half way through the demonstration Kate scaled a 50 foot flagpole and hung two banners before staging a mock hanging. It lasted for over an hour and in the end they just let us walk away without any charges or even a warning. It really was a night of victories.

I have attached a few of the first photos from the action (that is Kate hanging under that shroud). Around 11am, Hu Jintao arrived at the hotel adjacent to the Convention Centre. We chanted Free Tibet slogans, making sure that we were louder than the pro-China supporters who had been bused in to the counter the protests. At about 2:30pm, in direct view of the Tibetan flags, Hu Jintao’s entourage left the hotel for Niagara Falls and after four hours of yelling we were able to take a much needed break and prepare for the evening demonstrations.

The crowd reconvened at around 5:00pm with renewed energy. By 6:00pm, guests were beginning to arrive for the gala dinner organized by the Canada China Business Council. We repeatedly called on the Canadian business community to stop financing China’s occupation of Tibet, specifically targeting gala dinner sponsors Bombardier and Nortel for their involvement in the China- Tibet railway.
At 7:00pm, SFT members Chris Schwartz and Leah Henderson entered the Convention Centre. Dressed in a suit and tie, Chris entered the lobby area on the 1st floor of the convention centre, where the gala dinner was being held. In less than five seconds he had locked down to a bench next to the table where event organizers were checking tickets. is a student and youth based organization that works in solidarity with the Tibetan people in their struggle for freedom and independence.

This is our official mission statement, but how we transform this into concrete action relys a lot on YOU! - individual SFT members. Our members have pulled off some amazing actions for Tibet and our role as an organized body (yesterday we received our official incorporation documents from the Canada government - whoopeee!) is to provide the tools to train, educate, and inspire more of these actions. At the root of it, our organization is also about having fun - because what's the point in being involved in something if it's not fun. The above photo shows SFT Canada members and board members, SFT staff and friends doing just that at this year's SFT Canada conference held in May in Vancouver.

One suggestion at the conference was to use the wonderful world of internet technology to better communicate with each other across this vast country - hence the birth of the SFT Canada blog!
